How to share a Google Drive PDF publicly

Get your Drive sharing settings right so your PDF loads everywhere — and learn how to fix the errors that stop it.

How to share a Google Drive PDF publicly

Google Drive keeps every file private by default. That's great for personal documents, but it's the number one reason a PDF fails to load when you try to view or embed it elsewhere. If you want to turn a PDF into a flipbook, share it in a newsletter, or embed it on your website, the file has to be readable by anyone who has the link. This guide walks through exactly how to do that, and how to fix the errors that trip people up.

Why public sharing is needed

When a tool like Toombler displays your PDF, it fetches the file straight from Google Drive on behalf of your reader. If the file is private, Google returns a sign-in or permission screen instead of the document, and nothing loads. Setting the file to “Anyone with the link” tells Google it's fine to serve the file to visitors who have that link — without requiring them to log in or request access.

Step by step (desktop)

That copied link is the one you paste into Toombler or any other viewer. You don't need to change the file name or move it — only the sharing setting matters.

On a phone or tablet

In the Google Drive app, tap the three-dot menu next to your PDF, tap Manage access (or Share), set General access to Anyone with the link with the Viewer role, and copy the link. The steps mirror the desktop flow.

Common errors and how to fix them

Is public sharing safe?

“Anyone with the link” does not list your file in search engines or make it browsable by strangers — only people who actually have the link can open it. It's the same model used by countless shared documents. If a file is sensitive, don't make it public; for a catalog, brochure, menu or newsletter that you want people to read, it's exactly right.

How Toombler uses your shared file

Toombler reads your PDF from Google Drive and renders it as a flipbook — it never stores a copy of your file. Your document stays in your own Drive, under your control. When you update the file in Drive (keeping the same link), the flipbook reflects the change automatically. Ready to try it? Follow the flipbook guide or head straight to the dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

Does 'Anyone with the link' make my file show up in Google Search?
No. It only means people who have the exact link can open the file. It is not listed or indexed publicly by Drive.

Why is the Share option greyed out?
Your file is probably in a work or school Google Workspace account that blocks external sharing. Copy the PDF to a personal Google account, or ask your administrator to allow it.

Do I need to re-share after I update the PDF?
No. As long as you replace the file while keeping the same link, the sharing setting stays and your flipbook updates automatically.
